Fire crews praise blaze pensioner

From the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, first published Thursday 4th Apr 2002.

A PENSIONER has been praised by fire crews after extinguishing a chip pan fire at his Stotford Court home, in Clayton-le-Moors.

A spokesperson for Accrington fire service said they had received a call at 3.55pm yesterday but when they got there the flat owner had already begun to put the fire out.

He said: "The man hadn't been out of hospital very long, but he immediately knew to throw the fire blanket in his kitchen over the pan and turn the electric ring off.

"He did everything right."

The man was given oxygen at the scene for smoke inhalation, but was not taken to hospital.
